"It's not just the making of babies, but the making of mothers that midwives see as the miracle of birth" (Barbara Katz Rotman)

My name is Sarit Kavallero and I am a mother of two beautiful children. I am a qualified Shiatsu therapist - always been happy assisting others. my qualifications include 3 years of Chinese medicine and acupuncture study.

During the course of my work, I was asked one day to attend a friend's birth as a support person. This was when I decided that I can give more of myself helping women in this journey. This was the day my own journey has began...

My role as a Doula is to provide emotional, physical and practical support to pregnant women and their families during pregnancy and birth. My involvement normally begins at the early stages of pregnancy through the labor. Whether the mother wants to give birth naturally, with medications or is planning a c-section. I will be there to cater for her needs. In the hospital, home or birth center.

I will be helping the mother to cope with labor pains by using such techniques as massage, aromatherapy, acupressure, i will recommend optimal position, using the birth ball, correct breathing and more. Sometimes it is just to offer comfort and be there for you.

As of June 2007 I also offer baby massage classes. Please click here to learn more...

What is a Doula?
The word Doula comes from Greek, and refers to a woman who personally serves another woman. A birth Doula is a trained labor support person who provides emotional and physical support to a laboring woman and her partner. While she is not a medical professional, she can offer a wide range of comfort measures during labor - from massage to aromatherapy to continuous reassurance and coping techniques.

Why do you need a Doula?
Women supported by a Doula during labor have been shown to have:

Up to 50% reduction of cesarean rate
25% shorter labor for first time mothers
60% reduction in epidural requests
40% reduction in the use of artificial oxytocin
30% reduction in the use of forceps delivery.
A decrease in the use of pain relief medication

For more information regarding this study please refer to "Mothering the mother", How a  Doula can help you have a shorter, easier and healthier birth. Klaus, kennel, 19993.
